Erectile dysfunction, “ED” as it is commonly referred to, can be simply defined as the inability of a man to have an erection or to maintain an erection that is firm enough for sexual intercourse.
Erectile dysfunction can be caused by low testosterone, uncontrolled blood pressure, elevated blood sugar level (diabetes), elevated cholesterol levels, obesity (overweight), neurologic illnesses, prescription medications, injury to the male reproductive system or tobacco consumption, just to name a few. Erectile dysfunction can also be caused by stress, lack of self-esteem (self-worth), state of mind, depression, generalized anxiety and/or performance anxiety.
It is estimated that over 30 million men in America suffer from erectile dysfunction. ED is often perceived as a disease of old age, commonly experienced by men around the of age 50 and beyond. This is a misconception and not always the case as there are many individuals in their 20s, 30s, and 40s suffering from some form of erectile dysfunction, in regard to either experiencing a decrease in libido, trouble getting an erection, trouble maintaining an erection or a combination of all.
Erectile dysfunction is an ongoing issue and can lead to loss of self-esteem and can also contribute to relationship issues between couples.
Erectile dysfunction is often a difficult topic for discussion between couples and even between patients and providers.
